Zinc oxide is the best sunscreen ingredient for total UVA and UVB sun protection, in my opinion!
Zinc oxide and its cousin titanium dioxide are considered mineral sunscreens, or physical sunscreens. When applied to the skin they sit on top of it bouncing light rays off of the skin like bouncing a ball off of a wall. They provide non-irritating, complete UVA and UVB protection, meaning the skin is protected from ALL the harmful sun rays.
All the other sunscreens are called 'chemical' sun screens. They enter the skin and block the sun rays with a chemical reaction that occurs within the skin itself. This chemical reaction breaks down the sunscreen chemical so that it isn't there anymore. Because zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on the skin bouncing rays back into the sky, they provide longer lasting sun protection than the chemical sun screen agents. Plus, they are more stable in the sunscreen bottle than 'chemical' sunscreens, which break down quickly while they sit in the bottle waiting for you to use them.
